NL Sermon for Easter Sunday YrC March 31 2013
Text: Luke 24:1-16
Theme: From Redemption to Re-creation in Christ
He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Alleluia!
Let us pray: Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ, we celebrate and praise you, Almighty King, who rose from the dead and emerged victorious over sin and death! All honor and glory and adoration are yours, now and forever! Amen.
There is something very curious about human beings.
♰ We tend to be people who desire certainty in all things.
♰ We are fearful of strangers, of new places, or new products.
♰ The desire for self-protection and the fear of injury or death make us careful about the things we do.
At the same time, once we have experienced something without a negative outcome, we usually take it for granted.
♰ For example, I give you this folding chair.
♰ How many of you coming to breakfast this morning took the time to examine the chair you sat on to make certain that it would hold you up?
♰ And what about these pews? Well built, heavy wood, they will last another 50 years.
We place our faith in things physical—what we can touch, see, hear, hold and make with the skills & reasoning ability given to us by God.
Can we say the same today about the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth?
♰ Do we have the certain knowledge of Him not made by human hands that gives us the confidence to place our faith, hope and trust in Him now and for eternity?
♰ By ourselves, we do not—our sin nature prevents us from understanding God’s plan for us.
But God has provided for us His Holy Word so that we can know God even in the midst of our corrupted minds & hearts.
♰ Creation, Redemption and Re-creation.
♰ Today marks the end of part 2 and the beginning of part 3.
♰ Jesus has died on the cross to be our atoning sacrifice. By His work and His righteousness He has taken upon Himself all the sins of the world, past, present & future to fulfill the just demands of God’s Holy Law.
With His resurrection, something changes. Listen to Luke’s words carefully:
♰ But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the (women) went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. (A new dawn, a new day, a new creation!)
♰ And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. (On the way, the women suddenly remembered the great stone protecting the tomb—how are we going to move it? But it was, amazingly, set aside. Why?)
♰ But when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. (With great courage, they entered, expecting to find the body of Jesus, & instead the tomb was empty. Why?)
♰ While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. (Such apparel means men who are messengers from God.)
♰ And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? (Terrified, the women did what anyone in their place would do—bow before beings of great power & authority. And then comes the key question—why are seeking the living among the dead?)
♰ He is not here, but has risen. (Now they give the key answer—Jesus is Risen, He is Risen indeed! Alleluia!)
♰ Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that “the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.”
♰ And they remembered his words (The power of the Word of God begins now, to turn their terror to joy, to believe & to have faith that the Lord was not dead, but alive!)
♰ And returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. (There were many disciples present for this eye-witness account of what they saw & heard).
♰ Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles (these are the same women who have been traveling with, helping & serving the disciples as Jesus’ band of disciples grew larger.
♰ But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. (Consistent to the very end, the disciples could not grasp the magnitude of this report—Jesus dead on the cross and now risen from the grave on the third day!)
♰ But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened. (At first, Peter did not believe, but then the truth was revealed to Him in the words spoken by the women and he along with John ran to the tomb to see for themselves, and they were amazed!)
♰ That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. (It will be the Means of Grace, Word and Sacrament, that will bring these men to recognize Jesus.)
The story of God’s redemption in Christ Jesus has come to a close.
♰ The continuing narrative of God’s re-creation through the power of the Holy Spirit has begun!
♰ We human beings find it easy to trust & depend upon objects that we make & use regularly, like chairs.
And then there is Jesus the Christ.
♰ He is not physically present in our world.
♰ Therefore it is hard for people to believe in and trust this man who claimed to be God.
♰ It is hard to understand how a man could die and then rise from the dead.
♰ In Christ, God has broken in to our sick and suffering world with Good News, that He has reconciled us to Himself in the work of Jesus His One and Only Holy Son.
♰ The resurrection and the promise of Paradise are revealed ahead of schedule.
It’s amazing, frightening and challenges our expectations. What does this mean?
♰ Simply, that Jesus is the source of our salvation, the foundation of our fellowship, and the core of our vocation as disciples.
♰ The service we give to others through our vocations is a profound gift from God through us to the people we know.
What we accomplish in the world in the name of Jesus Christ flows from the Divine Service—meeting together to receive the gifts of Father, Son and Holy Spirit that come in the forms of Word and Sacrament, Law & Gospel, Creed & Song, praise and worship.
♰ Let this Easter Celebration be the first day of your new life in Christ Jesus.
♰ He was born for us, He died for us, He rose for us, He ascended for us, and now by the Holy Spirit He lives among us to make us His own!
